Interlude. The Swedish Anomaly

A dark arena from the back rows: four glowing performer figures on a vast screen, a live band beneath them, thousands of audience silhouettes.thermal

I had a player, and in it Dr. Alban, Boney M and “Sandstorm” took turns spinning. I am still convinced that in electronics the Swedes are ahead of the whole planet, although of everything on that player only Dr. Alban was Swedish, and even he came from Nigeria: Boney M was put together by the German producer Frank Farian, and Darude, the author of “Sandstorm”, is from Finland. The conviction, meanwhile, was confirmed with room to spare.

Sweden, with a population of about ten million people, has for many years held third place in the world in music exports, after the United States and Great Britain. It began with ABBA in the seventies, and in the nineties Swedish success acquired a specific address, a studio in Stockholm.
